Chemical-Free and Guilt-Free Pet Cleaning – Clean+Green Review & Giveaway (CLOSED)

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I’ve been known to spoil my cats. I can’t go to a pet store without buying a cool toy or treat for them. For example, my last trip to PetSmart was JUST to get some cat food. I left with cat food, litter, two scratching posts, and three bags of cat treats. There is one area, however, where I do not spoil my cats – and that’s with regards to the litter box. I know we’re supposed to keep the litter box nice and clean and filled with fresh litter. While I scoop twice or three times a day, I can only bring myself to do a complete clean (as in dump old litter, wash litter box, refill with brand new litter) every 6-7 days. FOR SHAME!

So I couldn’t really blame anyone but myself when Hobbes started “using” the floor next to the litter box. He’s very sensitive to smells and is a complete fresh litter snob. If there isn’t a mound of freshly poured litter, he won’t use  the litter box. I would come home at the end of a long day’s work with a nice “surprise” on the bathroom floor.

Then, a pet-cleaning hero swept in, offering me the chance to test out two Clean+Green Pet Cleaning Products. Clean+Green has innovative new pet cleaning products that are non-toxic, non-flammable, non-carcinogenic, and are harsh-chemical free. If you look at the list of ingredients, the “scariest” thing (if you can call it scary) is the eco-safe Nitrogen that they use to get the product out of the can!  The ingredients are all natural and consist of cane sugar derivatives, botanical extracts, purified water, and hydrated cellulose. What does all of that mean to me as a pet owner? It means that I don’t have to cover up the freshly cleaned floor with a box for fear that the cats will walk THROUGH the slightly damp area, get the chemicals on their paws, and then lick their paws when they groom themselves. I feel guilty just thinking about the number of times I used Clorox wipes to clean the area around the litter box.

I’ll admit, that I’ve often been skeptical of all-natural products. I think the scientific side of me kicks in and thinks “if it doesn’t smell like alcohol, then it isn’t really clean.” Once I received my samples, it was time to put Clean+Green Pet Cleaning Products to the test.

Products Being Tested:

Clean+ Green Dog & Cat Wood & Tile Odor Eliminator, Cleaner and Stain Remover

Clean+Green Cat Litter Box Odor Eliminator and Cleaner

Test Case:

The Litter Area. I know when you see the picture, you’re going to think, “What the hey? Is that a bowl full of litter in the toilet bowl?” Yes, it is. I am trying to toilet train my cats. If you’re laughing at me, then I’ll get the last laugh in 6 months when you’re still scooping litter and my cats are epically using the toilet with the automatic flusher that I have ready to be installed on their graduation day. Until then, my litter BOWL still has the same problems as a litter BOX. To the left is what I jokingly call the “large intestine” aka The Litter Locker. It’s what I use to scoop into so I don’t have to run to the trash can twice a day. You just scoop, turn to fresh plastic, scoop, turn to fresh plastic, and then once it’s full, make one trip to toss.

The Reviews:

litter_cleaner

First up, the Litter Box Odor Eliminator and Cleaner. Do you remember a few paragraphs back when I mentioned that Hobbes is a litter snob? I tried this product with the hopes that I could trick him into thinking that the nice pile of litter (that was really only used once by Daisy) is actually brand new fresh litter. First I scooped the litter into a pile, and then I did two quick sprays of the Litter box Odor Eliminator. The first time I sprayed the can, it spooked the cats but they got used to the sound quickly. Interestingly, I think that the Clean+Green product also eliminates the fake “fresh” smell that comes with the litter. There’s no inherent smell to the Litter Box Odor Eliminator, but it still took the cats about a day to adjust to the change.  I also used the cleaner while I was doing a full litter change. After dumping the litter, I sprayed the bowl a few times and wiped it clean. I’ve actually sniffed the bowl after cleaning and my nose can’t detect ANY smells whatsoever. The cats also were much quicker to use the bowl after cleaning then when I was using the Clorox wipes. (With Clorox, Daisy kept trying to bury the smell by pawing the edges of the toilet. With the Clean+Green Litter Box product, she just hops right in.)

Verdict: After the first day, the cats were using the litter bowl as if it had new litter. Hobbes only “used” the floor once, and that was when the bowl was “full” since I’d forgotten to scoop it earlier in the morning. I’ve since expanded my use to spraying this inside the litter locker as well to further reduce any smells. I highly recommend this product to cat owners.

wood_cleanerWhen Hobbes “used” the floor, that was my chance to test out the Wood & Tile Odor Eliminator, Cleaner and Stain Remover. I’m not sure if you can tell, but the floor in the litter area is tiled. I can’t go into quite as much description on this product since the litter product did such a good job. What I can say is that with a couple of sprays of the wood & tile cleaner, I was able to wipe away a few remaining pieces of solid waste, leaving the area completely clean. It did not leave any chemical smells or residue on the tile.

Verdict: Although I didn’t get a chance to test it on wood, I will say that this product cleaned my tile floor completely. I will be using it to clean the floor (and also to wipe down the sides and seat of the toilet)  each time I “deep clean” the bathroom.

Overall, I was VERY happy with how well the Clean+Green Pet Cleaning Products performed. I loved how I was able to get a virtually odor-free and clean environment without any chemicals that could harm the cats.

Dei Fratelli Sauces & Salsa Review

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

For someone who grew up watching their dad eating tomato sandwiches, many would think it’s odd that I don’t like tomatoes. It’s not that I don’t like tomatoes at ALL. I LOVE ketchup, spaghetti sauce, and many salsas (the sauce of the salsa, not the actual tomato chunks.) With that being said, during this weekend’s pasta party, I recruited nine fellow eaters to help me taste test Dei Fratelli Sauces & Salsas.

Dating back to 1923, when Carl R. Hirzel began growing and canning vegetables, the Hirzel/Dei Fratelli families now produce a wide range of tomato-based products (and interestingly – sauerkraut.) In addition, all tomato products are guaranteed GMO-free and most of their products are Certified Kosher as well.

Pasta Sauce Reviews:

Dei Fratelli offers eight different types of pasta sauce:

  • Arrabbiata
  • Fire Roasted Vegetable
  • Three Cheese
  • Tomato & Basil
  • Homestyle
  • Marinara
  • Mushroom
  • Traditional

Our testing group tried Fire Roasted Vegetable, Tomato & Basil, and Traditional Pasta Sauces.

pasta_sauce

Dei Fratelli Traditional Pasta Sauce – This one was my favorite and many of the testers agreed with me. The sauce had a bold, authentic Italian flavor that was savory with a hint of sweetness. I thought that maybe they’d mixed in some sort of meat sauce to get the savory flavor, but when I checked the ingredients, I saw nary a meat. I think that the Romano Cheese that is in it must be providing the extra something to the flavor.

Dei Fratelli Tomato & Basil Pasta Sauce – The rest of the testers thought that the Tomato & Basil was their favorite. It has larger pieces of diced tomatoes mixed into the sauce which one tester loved. It has a great balance of flavor, while still allowing the tomato and basil flavors to showcase themselves. It was a good mix of sweetness with an extra kick of flavor.

Dei Fratelli Fire Roasted Vegetables Pasta Sauce – Complete with crushed and diced tomatoes, zucchini, onions, carrots, and two types of peppers, the Fire Roasted Vegetable is perfect for veggie lovers out there. It has a milder flavor that is sweet and the texture is somewhat reminiscent of salsa.

Salsa Reviews:

In addition to the pasta sauce, we tried their new salsas, available in seven varieties:

  • Chipotle – Medium
  • Casera – Mild
  • Casera – Medium Hot
  • Black Bean n’ Corn  – Medium
  • Original  – Medium
  • Original – Mild

Up for testing (with the help of 3 bags of tortilla chips) were Black Bean n’ Corn, Casera – Medium Hot, and Original – Medium Salsas.

salsas

Dei Fratelli Black Bean n’ Corn Salsa – Medium – This salsa has an amazing chili flavor to it. It has a kick of spiciness mixed with a great sweetness that comes from the corn. It has a distinctive flavor that isn’t overpoweringt. I’m not sure if you can tell from the picture, but the salsa jar is about 2/3 empty since it was the favorite of the majority of the testers.

Dei Fratelli Original Salsa – Medium – This is a great classic salsa. It wasn’t too spicy and had a nice tomato flavor to it. One of the testers, a self-proclaimed salsa connoisseur, had taken her favorite Pace salsa out of the fridge to eat with the tortilla chips. After tasting the Dei Fratelli Original salsa, the Pace salsa went back into the fridge and the Dei Fratelli was declared her new favorite salsa.

Dei Fratelli Casera Salsa – Medium Hot – If you like spicy, this is your salsa. The Casera salsa deftly adds the heat so that you still get a strong kick without being overpowering.

As you can tell from the salsa pictures above, and as I know from the empty (as in scraping the inside of the jar with a spoon) pasta sauces, Dei Fratelli was a big hit at our pasta party. All of the Dei Fratelli Pasta Sauces and Salsa quality products that we tested had great flavor and tasted fresh. If you have a chance to try Dei Fratelli, I hope your experience was as delicious as ours.

Dei Fratelli are available in stores nation-wide or from their online store.

Hemming for Those Who Can't Sew – Mighty Mendit Review & Giveaway (CLOSED)

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I didn’t really learn how to sew. I learned a little bit during my 8th grade Home Economics class when we made pillows that were in the shape of our initials. I ambitiously tried to make a skirt once, buying a pattern, fabric, thread, etc., but that didn’t pan out. Needless to say, these days when something needs to be hemmed, I move it to the “I’ll fix it later” portion of the closet, where it sits for a year (or more) until I finally do something about it.

I think I’ve finally found something that will help me with my hemming problems without having to relegate clothes to the closet corner. The makers of Mighty Putty have a new product out called “Mighty MendIt.” Advertised as a “flexible bonding agent, that grabs, adheres and interlocks the fibers of virtually any fabric,” Mighty MendIt is perfect for a might unskilled seamstress. I’ll admit, that before taking the plunge, I wanted to test out Mighty MendIt on something that wasn’t “nice”, that way I wouldn’t be sad if it ruined the test clothing item.

Here’s a picture of the hem of some pants that were about to be tossed. I cut the leg portion off so I could get a good sense of the Mighty MendIt hemming capability.

hem

To hem the pants leg, I followed the instructions and squeezed a line of Mighty MendIt about 1-3″ long, then quickly folded the cloth over to create the hem.

mendit_row

This is the final result. There’s a little wrinkle in the fabric on the left side because I did a shoddy job of folding. If you’re more careful than I was, then you shouldn’t get any fabric wrinkles in your hems.

hem_after

gemsNow I know what you must be thinking. “Wow, what a great hem job. And are those rhinestones?” Actually yes, yes that is a good hem job. And yes, those are rhinestones. I used Mighty GemIt, which is included with Mighty MendIt to glue on some rhinestones to add some extra bling to these tired old pants.

Mighty GemIt was just as easy to apply as Mighty MendIt. It looks like Elmer’s glue, and you simply apply to the back of the rhinestones, then gently place the rhinestones onto the fabric. I had some problems with the small stones and ended up putting dots of Mighty GemIt directly onto the pants first, and then putting the rhinestones on top. That seemed to work well. Any extra blobs of the Mighty GemIt simply dried clear, so you couldn’t even see my mistakes.

In the end, Mighty MendIt and Mighty GemIt both did their jobs effectively. I ran the pants through the normal washer and dryer cycles to really test the durability (they recommend gentle cycle and a no heat dryer cycle). Only one gem, that might not have had enough glue, came off. When I tried pulling them hem apart, with some force, I was able to get some sections pulled apart easier than others. I think if I applied a little more glue, or had applied it in a wave pattern like their guide suggested, it might have been a stronger bond. But I think it’s still fine because most people don’t walk around trying to pull their hems apart. Also remember that the normal washer/dryer  cycles were an extreme case that isn’t recommended for clothes that have been repaired using MightyMendIt.

If you would like to gem and hem with the rest of us non-needle inclined, then now’s your chance to win your very own Mighty MendIt Kit in the WCatDD Mighty MendIt Giveaway!

mighty_prizeThe Prize:

One lucky winner will receive a box of Mighty Putty, one large bottle of Mighty MendIt, and one bottle of Mighty GemIt. (Note, the Mighty MendIt and Mighty GemIt don’t come in a box, but they’re still brand new and un-used.)
