Getting the Most Cash Back – Ebates vs. Discover

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I’m not sure where I first heard about Ebates.com…it might have been from Catherine over at frugal-freebies.com. But I’m not sure. Anyways, this holiday season was the first time I really got the opportunity to test it out, and I thought I’d share some of my thoughts here. Namely because I wanted to really dig into the BEST way for me to maximize my dollars, ie. how I can get the most money back into MY pocket.

Really, when it came to shopping online, it was between Ebates.com and my trusty Wolf Discover Card and purchasing through the ShopDiscover website. It seemed like both of these sites were the leading options to offer me the most cash back or rewards back for purchasing through the websites. Here is a break down of my experiences and logic for a few of the purchases that I made this holiday season.

Gift #1: Netflix.com Subscription for Mom
Ebates.com offers $13.00 Cash Back for Netflix
ShopDiscover does not offer any cash back
Conclusion: I purchased the subscription through Ebates.com. I haven’t received the credit back to my account yet, but I’m hoping it’ll show up in the next 30 days.

Gift #2: Northface Metropolis Parka for ME! (Hey…it’s snowing! I’ve got to keep warm.)
Ebates.com offers 8% cash back = $22.32 back
ShopDiscover has a holiday bonus for The North Face and is offering 15% cash back = $41.85 back
Conclusion: I purchased the parka through ShopDiscover. The credit will be received in my next billing cycle.

Gift #3: Up and StarTrek Blu-ray DVDs for Brother through Amazon
Ebates.com does not have any offers for Amazon.com purchases
ShopDiscover is currently offering Double Cash Back on all online purchases (standard is 1%) so I’ll get 2% cash back = ~$0.76. Now that I think about it, I’ll be getting an additional 2% back on all of the purchases I made through Ebates.com as well. Sweet!
Conclusion: If there aren’t any discounts being offered, then use the option that at least gives you something back. In this case, it was the cash back that’s standard with the Discover Card purchases.

Gift #4: Gap Clothing for ME! (Hey….it’s winter now! I need warm clothes too!)
Ebates.com is currently offering 2% cash back, but at the time my purchase, it was 10% cash back = $6.12 back
ShopDiscover offers 10% cash back with their holiday bonus = $6.12 back
Conclusion: This was actually a little trickier. On the surface, it seems like both of the offers are the same. However, if you look at the fine print, you’ll notice that you can’t combine the ShopDiscover cash back with any other offer. There isn’t the same condition with Ebates.com. Also, I have a Gap Card which earns me points for  gift certificates. I can’t earn those points if I use my Discover card. I went with Ebates.com. That way I got the 10% cash back discount, used a discount code (15% off), used a gift certificate I had ($10), and earned points towards my next Gap reward.

Final thoughts. Compare, compare, compare. In my opinion, there wasn’t a hands down winner between the two options. Here are a couple of tips to make sure you’re maximizing your rewards back.

  1. Double Check the Cash Back Reward – Ebates.com sometimes offers special deals on certain vendors and Discover Card may have promotions as well. Check both sites to make sure you find the one that’s offering the most cash back.
  2. Can you use discount/promo codes? – If you can find a promotion code or discount that reduces your price even more, it may be best to go through Ebates.com so you can use the promo code to get the discount and still receive the cash back.
  3. Can you earn rewards? – If you use a store-specific credit/rewards card, consider whether you’d like to earn rewards or (potentially) get cash back through your Discover card.

These are just a few thoughts of my own shopping experiences. Your credit card may have different offers that are better/worse than what my card offers. In general, I think that having an Ebates.com account is an excellent idea and you should check the site before pretty much every online purchase to make sure you’re getting the most cash back that you can.

If you have any other websites or strategies to maximize cash back, then please feel free to share!

Phone Calls Don't Get Cheaper than Free – Skype Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

2010 is rapidly approaching, and in a short few days, people all across the country will be tuning in to watch the ball drop in Times Square. For families that have different members living away from home, 12:01AM is pretty much when the phones start ringing and everyone begins to call everyone else to wish each other a Happy New Year. If you’re calling outside of your local phone area, then these New Year’s, and even other normal domestic or international calls can start to become rather pricey. Skype is a great alternative to allow you to make long distance phone calls for much, much cheaper than normal services – FREE.

I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that my mom knew about Skype before I did. (I know, I know…I just saw a pig fly by too!) She’s been using it to call her sister who lives overseas. You know how sisters can talk….for hours! So needless to say, when she learned that using Skype, you could make UNLIMITED FREE calls to other Skype users, no matter where they are in the world, it was a no-brainer.

Let’s jump a little bit into Skype and how it works. Skype is a peer-to-peer VoIP (voice over IP) phone service that allows users to make phone calls not just from computer-to-computer, but also from computer-to-landline and even landline-to-computer. They use a proprietary system to manage and encrypt the flow of data (your voice/video) to ensure optimal and secure communication across their network.

To use Skype on your computer, you must have an internet connection and download the software (it’s a free download) from www.skype.com. After downloading the Skype software, run the installation program to get started.

After the installation, you will be prompted to create a Skype account if you don’t have one already. This includes selecting your unique Skype user name, and providing the information that other people can use to find you in the Skype directory.

Once you’ve created your account, the next step is the testing process to make sure that your sound and (optional) video are working. If you have a newer laptop, you probably have a built in microphone and web cam. If you don’t have a microphone or headset, then you can purchase one directly from Skype or you can use a standard headset with microphone.

The Skype software makes it really easy for you go move through all of the steps of the set-up, so that in just a few minutes, you’re ready to  go and start making calls. To make your first call, you’ll need to add a contact. You can do this by using the Skype directory and searching the person using any of their contact information.

Once you’ve added the contact, you can initiate a phone call by clicking on their name in the contact list and hitting the “Call button.” The person you are calling will hear ringing and will receive a little pop-up window and that will ask them if they want to answer or decline the call.

You’ll notice that one of the options to answer the call is to “Answer with video.” If you have a video camera or web cam set up, then you can enable video calling, allowing the person calling you to see you while you’re talking to them. You can also take video snapshots of the person you are watching (or yourself) to send, save, set as profile images, etc.

Once the connection is made, you and the person you are talking to can talk for practically forever – still for FREE. But, if for some reason you get bored with the person you are talking to, you can also decide to conference in someone else! If you conference in another Skype user, the call will still remain free. I decided to test out their computer-to-mobile connection and used my free credit to call one of my friend’s cell phones. When you are conferenced together, everyone can hear everyone else as if you were doing a three-way phone call. Skype allows you to conference in up to 5 people into a conversation.

All Skype to Skype calls are free of charge, but as I’ve mentioned a couple of times, you’re also able to use Skype to call mobile and landlines. To enable this functionality, you need to purchase Skype credits for your account. There are three VERY reasonably priced packages, which are $2.95/month for unlimited US & Canada calls, $5.95/month for unlimited calls to certain countries, and $12.95/month for unlimited calls worldwide (40 countries.) If you’re not ready to commit to a subscription, you can also purchase the pay as you go plan, which has rates starting at $0.021 cents/minute plus a $0.079 connection fee per call. Once you’ve purchased your credits, you can click on the “Call Phones” tab, which will bring up a number pad that you use to dial the landline or cell phone you are trying to dial

Now that I’ve gone over the basics, here are my general thoughts and opinions about Skype. First, the user interface is VERY easy to use. It seems like most things are compatible with the Microsoft Office suite, and lots of the features and functionality look similar to Outlook and MSN. You can even import your contacts directly from Outlook and Yahoo. So, if you’ve used MS, you shouldn’t have any problems with Skype. Even if you haven’t, it’s very easy to figure out how to do. The chat interface is similar to other messaging systems and includes various fun smilies and the ability to play games with each other. Another cool functionality is that you are able to share screens so one person can watch what you’re doing on your computer.

Both the audio and the video quality were very high. There wasn’t any lag in the communication and the video images were clear and without static. If you didn’t know you were on a computer, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference in sound between Skype and a normal phone. Even when talking to the person on their mobile phone, they said that they heard everything very clearly and without any delay.

Initially, the testers and I thought that Skype would only be useful for people who are on the computer a lot. But once we started thinking about all of the different uses and digging more into the cost structure, it quickly became apparent that Skype would be a cost-savings for pretty much anyone who wants to have a cost-effective phone plan.

Actually, one of my friends, who helped me to test Skype out, has been looking for a new phone solution for his household. His current plan provider hasn’t been able to provide the service or the price he’s been looking for, and other services have been really expensive. After testing out Skype, he’s decided that he’s going to purchase a Skype phone and the Skype Service. His current phone plan costs him ~$100/month ($1200/year.) With Skype, after purchasing a Skype-enabled phone ($169.99), a dedicated Skype online number ($60.00/year), and the unlimited US & Canada subscription ($2.95/month = $36/year) he’ll save $934 for the first year and over $1100 the second year. That’s a 78% and 92% savings over his current plan.

Another thing to consider is that once you have a Skype account, as long as you have your laptop and an internet connection, you can make phone calls wherever you are. For example, if you’re traveling to Paris, instead of paying huge international rates on your cell phone, or even purchasing a calling card, if you have your laptop, you can call someone for free. This makes Skype a great option for anyone who is on-the-go.

Overall, Skype is an extremely cost-effective calling plan (you can’t beat FREE.) The software is easy to use and the connection quality was top notch.

For more information about Skype please visit their website at www.skype.com. Since downloading Skype and using it to call other Skype users is totally FREE, I highly suggest that you download it and test it out for yourself.

Get Your Body Clean from the Inside with the Jillian Michaels Detox & Cleanse – Review

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I’ve heard lots of great things about doing a body detox – mainly helping the body to cleanse itself of toxins such as heavy metals or pollutants. However, I was hesitant to take the plunge because many detox systems require fasting as well and right now, I look food too much to even think about fasting for two weeks.

detox_boxI was very excited to learn about the Jillian Michaels Triple Process Total Body Detox & Cleanse plus Probiotic Replenishment system. Now, before I get into the actual review, I want to emphasize that this post is just sharing my own opinion and experience with the system. I am not a doctor and therefore have absolutely no medical background or experience when I make these statements, so please consult with your own physician if you have any questions. Also note that many of the statements made on the website, which I may post here, have not been evaluated by the FDA. With that said, let’s move on.

Jillian Michaels (think the insanely buff trainer from The Biggest Loser) has launched an entire line of weight-loss products to help people achieve their health and fitness goals. I was given the option to try out her Triple Process Total Body Detox & Cleanse plus Probiotic Replenishment and took the opportunity mainly because it would offer the benefits of detoxing with having to fast. Yay!

detox_pillsI opened up the box and was amazed that it was just three small packages of pills and a piece of paper. Included with the Detox & Cleanse system is a free 7-day trial membership to the Jillian Michaels online weight-control and fitness plan, two packages of purple pills (28 pills total) that are the detox and cleanse MetaCaps, and one package of pink pills (7 pills total) that are the Probiotic MetaCaps. The instructions say to take two purple pills mornings and evenings for one week, then one pink pill in the mornings for a week. It seemed easy enough, so after reading the instructions, my first ever detox and cleanse started. Here’s a brief diary of my pill popping experience:

Day 1: 7:30AM – First two pills of the detox & cleanse. 8:30AM – I have no idea why, but I am STARVING! I decide to grab a bagel with my morning ‘bucks. So glad I still get to eat during detox. 6:00pm – I’m starving again, but just pop a hand full of peanuts until dinner after Fellowship.

Day 2: 7:45AM – 2 more purple pills. Not as hungry. My skin looks like it’s clearing up. Is that an expected side-effect of detox? 11:00AM – I won’t go into details, but I think the “cleansing” has officially begun. 6:00PM – Two more pills with a full glass of water, then time for dinner.

Day 3: I slept through my alarm. Fortunately, I have a back-up system – two cats who like to be fed by 8:00AM every morning. I wake up and I’m starving. 8:00AM – 2 purple pills and I grab a yogurt to-go.

Day 6: 10:15AM – I let myself sleep in this morning so I’m taking the purple pills a little later. One things I’ve noticed since starting the Detox & Cleanse is that I’m a LOT hungrier.

Day 7: 8:00PM – I just took my last two purple pills. There has been a lot of “cleansing” going on – pretty regularly since Day 2. It makes me feel like my body is really getting rid of stuff that might have been stuck somewhere in the intestines. If that’s actually what’s happening – I have no clue. My skin still looks like it’s been clearing up. Pink pills start tomorrow.

Day 8: 8:25 AM First pink pill going down the hatch. The pink pills are the Probiotic MetaCaps which are meant to help “replenish the good bacteria” in your digestive system.

Day 9 – 13: I’m visiting the family for the holidays, but I’m still taking my one pink pill in the mornings…although then it was technically three hours late since it was on PST instead of EST. In general, I’m not noticing the same hungriness or the same “cleansing” that I had while taking the purple pills.

Day 14: 12:00PM – I slept in today so I didn’t take my final pill until noon.  I have just completed the Jillian Michaels Triple Process Total Body Detox & Cleanse plus Probiotic Replenishment. Do I get a certificate or a plaque or something?

Conclusion:

After completing the Jillian Michaels Triple Process Total Body Detox & Cleanse Plus Probiotic Replenishment, I’ve decided that I would definitely like to make this a regular part of my health routine. Not frequently – probably every 3 or 4 months. Why? Because during the detox and cleanse, I DEFINITELY felt like that is exactly what was happening. Most of the things that the website says the system does, I can’t measure, but one of the statements they make is that you will “feel lighter and more energized” and that’s definitely something that I felt. It seemed like I had more energy and that my body was purging staleness out of it. That’s probably why I was getting so hungry – because I was emptying out of some really bad body gunk (an official scientific term – haha!) which left room for healthier and fresher food and nutrients.

In addition, the system is also formulated to help:

  • Reduce Belly Bloat*
  • Reduce Body Waste Buildup Without Harsh Chemical Laxatives or Fasting*
  • Support Colon and Digestive System*
  • Support the Liver’s Natural Detoxification Process*

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

It’s also good to know that I didn’t seem to have any negative side effects from taking the system, other than a few extra trips to the bathroom (but who’s counting.) This may be because most of the ingredients seem to be natural. The majority of the ingredients are some sort of powder or extract from plants. Knowing that I’m not ingesting any harsh chemicals as part of the cleansing process is a big plus for me.

If you would like to try some of Jillian Michaels’ weight-loss products, they are available online from www.jillianweightloss.com and from retailers nation-wide, including GNC, WalMart, Target, and grocery stores. If you want to try the detox & cleanse system, there is currently a buy 2 get 1 free special when you purchase from www.jillianweightloss.com.
