The London 2012 Olympic Games kicked off this weekend, and along with the thousands of athletes in attendance were three-time Olympian and World Champion Water Polo Player Brenda Villa and her mom, Rosario. Moms may be considered the unsung heroes of the Olympic Games, as they’re the ones who are encouraging, supporting, and driving kids to early morning training or all day events.

My mom passed away 12 years ago. She was my best friend, mentor and hero. A fabulous woman who gave so much of herself to anyone that needed help. I have notes, letters and cards that she wrote to me that seem to pop up when I need her wisdom the most. I also have a letter for my daughter that my mom wrote before she passed away. She also made a memory book of her life for my daughter. She had many friends who are still guiding me.
