This past week, I’ve had the opportunity to test out Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and the Arm & Hammer Fridge Fresh. While many people may be familiar with Arm & Hammer Baking Soda for it’s many uses, I mainly knew it as an ingredient in chocolate chip cookies. I was very surprised to discover that I didn’t have a box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda in my cabinets. Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Deodorizer – check. Arm & Hammer Cat Litter – Check. One year old Arm & Hammer Fridge Fresh Refrigerator Air Filter- Check. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda – MISSING. I can’t believe I haven’t baked cookies in so long.
I was intrigued when I got my samples in the mail and it came with a long list of uses for Arm & Hammer Baking Soda beyond baking. Some of these include:
- Washing fruit & vegetables
- Polishing silver flatware
- Cleaning microwaves & food safe surfaces
- Washing dishes, pots & pans
- Deodorizing drains, garbage disposals, fridges, freezers, and trash cans.
Wait…de-odor my Trash Can odors? I definitely need that. Even though I rinse out the empty cans of cat food before I throw them into the trash, they still start to stink up the place. And how is it that even though I use a plastic trash bag every time, the actual trash can has assumed a distinct “trash” smell that it maintains even while empty?
Sadly, my kitchen smells don’t stop with the can. Determined to use the Fridge Fresh Refrigerator Air Filter, but worried that my fridge was much too clean (aka empty) for me to be able to tell whether it’s working, I hesitantly opened up the fridge door and took a sniff. Is that a hint of garlic that I detect? *SNIFF* That’s much more than a hint. My fridge smells like garlic-flavored stale air.
Satisfied that I had two perfect ways to test out Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, I embarked on the WCatDD Arm & Hammer Sniff Test.
Day 1:
Cleaning the Trash Can – The trash can smells like: trash. I added a 1/4 cup of baking soda to a quart of warm water. As I poured the baking soda into the water, it started dissolving with a somewhat pleasing carbonated sound. I have to wash the trash can in the bath tub, because there’s no way I’m putting a trash can in my sink. I use a towel and wipe the sides and the edge of the trash can with the mixture, then rinse the whole thing out with warm water. After washing, the trash can smells like: plastic (at least it’s not trash.) In addition to cleaning with the baking soda & water mixture, Arm & Hammer recommends sprinkling some baking soda between trash layers, which I will do.
Installing the Fridge Fresh – The fridge smells like: garlic. Installing this was super easy. Open the container, pull the tab, press downwards, stick onto clean surface.
Day 3: Sniff Test #1
Trash Can: Since it’s a new bag of trash, it started of fresh. I’ve since added 3 cans of rinsed out cat food cans, and a bag that contained Turkey medallions, and one bag that had smokey glaze (for the turkey.) I sprinkled a layer of A&H over the trash as suggested. No discernible trash smell.
Fridge: The fridge actually does smell better. There’s no hint of the garlic or the somewhat stale/metallic air that fridges can sometimes smell like.
Day 4: I’ve discovered a new use for Arm & Hammer Baking Soda. For about a year, I’ve been getting my daily ‘Bucks in a plastic mug. I’d come home, soak it in soapy water, wash it, rinse it, but for some reason, it would STILL smell like coffee. My solution? Add some baking soda to the water while washing, then let soak overnight in a soapy water with baking soda. Voila! Fresh smelling coffee cup.
Day 5: Sniff Test #2
Trash Can: While diligently sprinkling layers of A&H, I’ve since added 3 more cat food cans and some old Chicken with Cashew Nut chinese left overs. While it doesn’t smell like rotten trash, I can smell the chinese food.
Fridge: Still smelling fresh!
Day 6: The trash can is full, so it’s time to take out the trash. Arm & Hammer has successfully blocked any trashy smells from coming from the trash can!
Conclusion: I’ve tested Arm & Hammer’s deodorizing functionality, cleaning capabilities, and cooking prowess (in a lemon bread I cooked this weekend.) Overall, I was very pleased with the results, having achieved a garlic-free smelling fridge and a trash can that doesn’t smell.
