Call me crazy, but I won’t eat a salad if it doesn’t have croutons. Those little bite-sized pieces of crispy bread help give the salad some substance, and help to differentiate between me and a rabbit that is only eating lettuce. Croutons are probably more important to me because I refuse to put other junk vegetables on my salad – no tomatoes, no cucumbers, no weird looking peas. Sometimes I’ll put on carrots, usually some bacon, and always, always croutons.
About Mrs. Cubbison’s Restaurant Style Croutons
I’ve always though that there had to be an art form to making a good crouton. It has to be just the right size (not to small), baked to the right crispiness (not to hard), with just the right amount of flavor (not too strong.) Mrs. Cubbison’s accomplished all of these things with their Classic Seasoned Restaurant Style Croutons.
I used the Classic Seasoned croutons to help spice up a Caesar Salad. (Incidentally, the do have specific Caesar Salad croutons, as well but I like the flexibility of Classic – a crouton that can be all things to all salads.) You’ll be able to see from the photo that each crouton is about a one inch square and about half an inch thick. It’s a meaty crouton – one where it will help make your leafy salad a good, solid bite.
Something I really liked about Mrs. Cubbison’s Classic Seasoned croutons was the texture. They had a great outer crunchiness to it that was consistent for each bite without being too hard. It’s also important to me that I was able to stick my fork into the crouton. Usually when I eat my salads, I stab at the lettuce and then top the bite off with a crouton, to help keep the lettuce on the fork. If the crouton is too brittle, the crouton will just break into pieces, forcing you to have too scoop the croutons into your mouth.
Finally, the crouton had a great flavor. It was more than just bread. It had a toasty taste in addition to a hint of cheese and some spices. A quick check of the ingredient list showed me that it has Romano Cheese, Parmesan Cheese and the mysterious “Spices.” The blend of all of these was pleasant and distinct without competing with my salad dressing.
