  • Ghost Buddy #2: Mind If I Read Your Mind? It’s harder to get kids to read these days. Between TV, video games, and text messages, a lot of kids really miss out on the “joy of reading.” Fortunately, there are some books that not only can get kids reading again, but can also get kids excited to read. The Ghost Buddy book series is the perfect set of books to entertain the kids (or even the whole family!)

    Not your Typical Ghost Story

Review by WiC Chick Brooke (with some comments/edits by The WiC Project)

Written by best-selling authors Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver, Ghost Buddy #1 Zero to Hero and Ghost Buddy #2 Mind if I Read Your Mind tell the story of on Billy Broccoli, an eleven-year-old boy, who lacks confidence in himself and his ability to make friends.  In Ghost Buddy #2 Mind if I Read Your Mind, Billy is stumped about what talent he has to demonstrate at the Speak Out Challenge.  After spending a whole evening thinking of it, he decides to practice reciting the alphabet backwards until he is able to do it in under 15 seconds.  He practices for hours, and finally accomplishes it.  However, the Hoove decides that this talent is boring and will not help Billy look cool, let alone win the challenge.  Hoover comes up with a grand scheme to help Billy win the competition: he will help Billy “read minds”.

I love that the series is so unique and engaging.  Usually stories involving ghosts are scary stories, but this one is a fun twist on the typical ‘ghost’ story.  The books kept my tween (and me!) interested and wanting to know what was going to happen next.  The storyline is wonderful.  The characters were funny and endearing.  My daughter and I were eager to read the books and finished them quickly.  It’s a perfect combination of fun as well as learning lessons about friendship along the way.  We are looking forward to the third installment in the series, How to Scare the Pants Off Your Pets.

To add the Ghost Buddy series to your family’s book collection, you can purchase Ghost Buddy #1 Zero to Hero and Ghost Buddy #2 Mind if I Read Your Mind online from Amazon for just $5.99 each.

About Ghost Buddy #2: Mind If I Read Your Mind?

Billy and Hoover are back in the hilarious new series from bestselling authors Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver!

It’s time for Moorepark Middle School’s annual Speak Out Challenge, and Billy Broccoli thinks he’s got it made. With his best friend Hoover Porterhouse—the ghost with the most—by his side, Billy’s got the competition in the bag. Who wouldn’t vote for a demonstration on mind reading?

But when Billy lands a spot on the sixth-grade team, he starts spending more time with his new teammates than he does with Hoover. And the Hoove plays second fiddle to no one! If Billy’s not careful, his secret weapon might just vanish into thin air, leaving Billy to pick up the pieces of a demonstration-day disaster!

I know that kids usually like intriguing stories (most of the time mysteries) that can really capture their attention and want them to seek out more information! Books like Ghost Buddy 2 is probably just the type of book that would really grab a young reader’s mind and allow for imagination to flow and instill an eagerness to learn more!
