  • Sometimes I miss being a kid. While adults have to suffer in toe-smushing heels or uncomfortable shoes for work, kids get to wear shoes that light-up or even roll. My grocery trips would be so much faster if I could roll down the aisles along with my shopping cart. Well, with my new pair of Heelys, I totally can!

While my friend and I were practicing on our Heelys in the park, every adult we saw made the comment of “I don’t think I can do that.” Well, I’m here to tell you that if you can walk, balance, and point your toes to the sky, you can TOTALLY Heely. (Is “heely” a verb? I’m not sure it is, but I’m going to pretend like it is. Heely – verb – meaning to wear and to roll on one’s Heelys.)

When shopping for Heely’s I was a little worried about whether or not they had my “style.” Fortunately, Heelys offers a wide selection of shoe colors and styles. You’ll be able to tell the men’s shoes from the women’s shoes by color, and most sizes are one size fits men’s, women’s, and kid’s (ex. 7 Youth = 7 Mens = 8 Womens.) I found these uber cute white ones that are stylish and match with everything. The shoes are well made and totally comfortable to wear.

After you get your Heely’s, you’ll need to lace-em up and install the wheels. The cool thing about Heelys is that you can wear them as normal tennis shoes or as rolling shoes. But what fun would it be to just WALK in Heelys? To install the wheels, use the special tool to remove the cover, then push your wheel into the slot.

After your wheels are installed, it’s time to learn how to Heely. The general idea is to keep your toes lifted off the ground and roll, but I recommend checking out the instructional video for the basics of heeling.

With basic instructions under my belt, and a friend with me as a partner in “Heely-ing” (or whatever it’s called), I head out to a nearby park to let the amusement begin. At first, you may have trouble walking in your Heelys. We normally walk from heel-to-toe, but if your heel wants to roll, some amusing things may occur. Until you get used to the Heelys, pretend like you’re almost walking on your tip toes (although it doesn’t have to be literal), making sure to keep your weight towards the front of the shoe.

I’m happy to say that I didn’t roll into anyone accidentally and I didn’t fall once. My friend and I were able to get comfortable with our Heelys in about 10 minutes of “practice.” The biggest thing for me was keeping my toes up. Whenever I started feeling a little wobbly, I would keep putting my toes down, which would stop the roll. Once you learn to keep your toes up, you can keep going and going. Without a doubt, this is one of the most fun methods of transportation I’ve used in a long time. I think the skateboarder that rolled by was totally jealous too.

Here’s a little video of my adventure in the park! If you’re worried about whether or not you can “heely”, remember that these videos were taking the same morning that I had first put on my Heelys. So…you can do it!

You can bet that I’ll be wearing my Heelys to the mall and to the next grocery store trip. Why should kids have all the fun? Besides, it’ll totally be a time saver.

If you want to pick-up your own Heelys, check out the selection on the Heelys website. Get a pair for yourself, your kids, and your spouse so you can all “heely” together!

Be honest – how many of you sing in the shower or sing in the car to your favorite song? I think at some point most of us have picked up a hair dryer or a bottle and sung a little ditty. Singing can be a great way to express feelings and joy, and can… Continue reading →
    Oral-B Stages
Oral care is an important thing for kids to learn at an early age. We know that it’s much hard to learn new tricks as we get older, so showing kids how to keep their teeth and gums clean and healthy is important. The trick is that “adult” toothpastes aren’t necessarily appropriate or kid-friendly. That’s… Continue reading →
    The Smurfs Dance Party
I remember going to the local arcade and watching with awe as people spun, jumped, and jiggied their way to high scores on the dance games. I’m sure many of them had the game at home and practiced for hours before making their public appearances, but that didn’t make the show any less entertaining. Fortunately… Continue reading →
Clue: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Edition
Sorry Colonel Mustard – you’ve been kicked out of the conservatory with your pipe. There’s a new Clue in town and instead of figuring out who knocked off Mrs. Peacock, I’ll be working with Harry, Hermione, and Ron to figure out who has kidnapped a Hogwarts classmate. The new Clue: Harry Potter and the Deathly… Continue reading →
