  • Traditionally I’ve been using Skype while at home. Skype is a great way to make and receive phone calls to other Skype users across the country, totally free. So if I’m working on a blog or surfing the net, I can just call someone on Skype and start chatting. Or I can be part of a one-on-one video call – a great way to talk to friends or family members that aren’t quite so close (although we’ve been known to do video calls from upstairs to downstairs – it’s easier than yelling.) You can also share your screen as part of the free Skype to Skype features.

But Skype offers so much more than just at home phone and video call convenience. Skype also offers a free and easy-to-download phone app that can be used on your Windows, Android, iPhone or iPad. That means you can be out grabbing a cup of coffee or running errands and you can receive and make video calls to friends and family members.

Using the Skype phone app to make video calls can making shopping easier (picture pointing the camera to a new shirt and asking, “do you like this one or this one?”) It also adds a new element to the concept of sharing vacation photos. Instead of waiting to get back from a vacation, you simple set-up a video call on your mobile phone when you arrive, then just walk around, sharing the beautiful views with your friends and family back home.

Using Skype on your mobile phone makes “cell phone calls” much more interactive and engaging. You’re still using your cell phone, but you also get to “see” the person you’re talking to. It really does help you feel more connected during the conversation.

I’m not alone in using Skype to make things easier. Check out this infographic sharing how moms are using technology to help stay connected.

Thanks so much for the information. I have heard of Skype but have not yet really looked into it or tried it. My lovely granddaughter lives 6 hrs away and I miss her so much! Skype seems like it might be a good idea for me and perhaps I could see/talk to her more often. I am off to go check into it now and see if it can help me span the miles between us. Thanks again!
