Leave Your Plants Home Alone with Plant Nanny

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

There’s a saying that “He who plants a garden plants happiness.” For those of us without yards, but who still want to be happy, we have houseplants! I have about 9 African Violets, one false Jasmine, one aloe, and three plants that I’ve forgotten the names of. I love having plants in the house because they just bring an extra burst of color and a feeling of life to the place. Who doesn’t love that?

One of the biggest problems I’ve had with house plants is when and how much to water them. The african violets are easy (self-watering pots,)  but the other plants actually need to be watered. As the unofficial queen of  “work smart, not hard”, I was lured in by the promise of Aqua Globes. Hand blown glass “beakers” that you fill with water and then stick up-side down into your plant for automatic watering. Sadly, the Aqua Globes weren’t quite what I hoped for. The spouts are very narrow, making them difficult (and time consuming) to refill. I also found that the spout would frequently get plugged up with dirt which would cause the water to not come out at all (thirsty plants) or if the globe wasn’t placed in the dirt just-so, all the water would come out much too fast (soggy plant.)

Needless to say, I was a little skeptical when I stumbled across another automatic plant watering device at the local nursery. But ever one to try something new, I took the plunge and purchased two Plant Nanny Glass Watering Globes for the two new plants I was buying. I wish I’d bought three more. These things are awesome!

What makes the Plant Nanny Glass Water Globes different from it’s infomercial competitor?

Structure:
The Aqua Globe is one long piece of blown glass (that you have to be careful not to break). The Plant Nanny Glass Watering Globe consists of a stake that is made out of ceramic (it’s the same color as some clay pots) and a glass globe (which holds about 12oz of water.)

plant_nanny_how

Refilling:
The opening for the Plant Nanny Glass Watering Globe is about half and inch wide. More than enough space to have the tap on full blast to fill the globe up quickly. Also, you only have to remove the globe to refill – you don’t have to pull out the stake.

plant_nannyAppearance:
The Plant Nanny Glass Watering Globe has a clean and elegant look. It is low profile, sitting near to the dirt so it doesn’t draw attention away from your pretty plants. (See picture of one of the clear globes in action in one of my un-determined species of house plant.)

Watering Consistency:
Since the water seeps into the soil through the stake, there aren’t any tiny holes that get clogged with dirt. All your dirt stays in the pot (as opposed to getting pulled out when you have to refill the Aqua Globes.) The water seeps through the ceramic as needed so the dirt stays nice and moist (but not swampy!)

Overall, I believe that the Plant Nanny Glass Watering Globes are well worth the money spent!  They’re the perfect solution if you’re heading out for a vacation…or are just a little bit lazy or forgetful about watering your beloved plants like I can sometimes be.

Now, I bet you’re wondering – “Wow! That sounds great! How do I get one?” (And if you aren’t – you should be! Trust me. These ARE awesome.) But wait! There’s more! The Plant Nanny Company has generously donated not one, not two, but THREE Plant Nanny Pastel Water Globes for a nice giveaway!
