While we’re supposed to be on the road to economic recovery, one area that continues to suffer from budget cuts is education. Schools are seeing smaller budgets which can lead to layoffs and school programs having to be cut. With the dangers and temptations that lurk outside of school, community and after-school programs become key in supporting our youth.
February’s Every Day Hero, Sabrina Williams, has been supporting the North Lawndale community in Chicago through her work with America SCORES, a national after-school literacy organization. America SCORES uses team-based programs that encourage students in academic achievement, work in their communities, and improves their health. Sabrina was also Chair of the Parent Committee at her children’s elementary school and is a writing coach for 3rd – 5th grade boys.
Through the efforts of millions of other Every Day Heroes across the country, and their support of their communities, differences are being made. If you want to help the youth or adults in your community to improve their literacy, explore the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which offers literacy grants and literacy programs in 40 states across the US. These programs support and encourage those who want to learn to read, learn English, or who want to receive their GED.
If you have a Dollar General store in your community, don’t forget to grab the February P&G brandSAVER from last Sunday’s (January 27th) paper. (Yes, you might need to check recycle bins if you didn’t grab it beforehand.) You can use P&G brandSaver coupons to get high quality P&G products at Dollar General, on top of their already low prices.
