Growing up with a Chinese mom, as a child you pick up little bits of wisdom that stick with through the years. Some of them may be “old wives tales” – like the number of grains of rice you leave in your bowl is the number of scars your husband will have on your face – and some of them maybe be herbal remedies, like Tiger Balm (the wonder balm…seriously.) One trick that my mom always did when my tummy was feeling funny was to have me drink ginger ale. From childhood to this day whenever I felt sick, I’d start drinking ginger ale for it’s magical healing powers. It wasn’t until later that I realized that it was the ginger that my mom was secretly feeding me which was making me feel better.
Ginger has many culinary and health benefits. It’s used worldwide in dishes such as sushi to desserts like ginger snaps. When it comes to health, it is effective to help treat nausea (including morning sickness) and may be helpful in decreasing arthritis pain, treating heart disease, and even combating colds. With so many positive attributes, I can understand why people would want to keep ginger in part of their diets, and for that you’ll want to check out The Ginger People.
The Ginger People is the go-to source to purchase all things ginger. Starting in 1984, The Ginger People have been manufacturing and supplying premium ginger products from factories in Australia and California. They are “the world’s only producer of closed-kettle artisan style crystallized ginger.” From candy to beverages to sauces, The Ginger People have a large product line of over 80 ginger ingredients and products products that can be used to infused this healthy food into our meals.
I decided to make a drinking using The Ginger People’s Ginger Juice. First I started off making a ginger limeade. There’s a small tea store near where I work that sells ginger limeade for $3.00 a cup. Yikes! Ginger People’s Ginger Juice is just $4.00 for a bottle, and with the high potency of their juice, you can make a LOT of ginger limeade. Mixing together water, lime juice, lots of sugar and ginger juice, the resulting ginger limeade was like limeade with a kick to it. It’s incredibly refreshing and will really wake you up and make you feel livelier from the extra spiciness that the ginger juice infuses into the drink. A word of caution with ginger juice – a little goes a long way here so start off with a small amount (maybe around 1 teaspoon) and then slowly add more ginger to taste. It’s easier to add more than the take out.
Next up was a batch of Ginger Scones using The Ginger People Stem Ginger in Syrup. I was really looking forward to trying them because after tasting some ginger scones in Massachusetts, I was determined to be able to make the delicious breakfast treat when I moved down to the DC area. For my first attempt, I didn’t have any The Ginger People products – I used some plain crystallized ginger from the grocery store, and some random recipe I had found online. It did not pan out well.
Even with that experience, I was optimistic that The Ginger People knew what they were talking about and that they wouldn’t give me a recipe that didn’t taste good. I also trusted that the quality of their ginger would be as good as they claim to be. I followed the recipe on their website and was amazed at how quickly and with how little effort I was able to make the scones. I diced up the stem ginger, mixed it in with the other ingredients, then flattened it out, sprinkled it with sugar and was eager to taste the results.
They did not let me down.
These scones were AMAZING! They had the perfect scone texture – thick and moist but not like a cake or a muffin. The pieces of stem ginger were delicious, with some of the kick dialed down since they’d been soaking in syrup. Each bite was a treat to my taste buds. One of my fellow testers was very apprehensive to even try the scone – he said he didn’t like ginger. After one bite, his face slowly turned from hesitation to delight when he declared how much he enjoyed the ginger scones. He kept saying, “Wow, I like ginger!” I initially made just a half batch of scones and they did not last a day! All of the scones were eaten the next day for breakfast. My only tip on this one would be to make sure you dice up the stem ginger into nice small pieces, otherwise you’ll be munching on large pieces of ginger as you eat your scone.
After trying a couple of The Ginger People products I have to say – I LOVE GINGER! The Ginger People have made it incredibly easy to infuse the wonderful flavor of ginger into your daily diet- whether it’s by adding some strips of minced ginger to the top of your salad or mixing it into your drinks. I’ve since used the Ginger Juice to make an amazing Ginger Lemonade, as well as a hot Ginger Tea.
