With Winter weather comes a lot of hair challenges. From split ends caused by heated air to brittle hair damaged by the cold, getting beautiful winter hair can seem impossible. Fortunately, with a few easy tricks, your hair can look amazing all year round. Here are 7 hair care tips for beautiful, healthy hair during the winter.
1. Shampoo less often
Reducing the number of times you shampoo during the winter can reduce itching and flaxes during the winter. If you’re used to washing your hair daily, you might find that your hair can’t handle going days between washings with your traditional shampoo. I love using Wen by Chaz Dean Cleansing Conditioner because it allows me to stretch the amount of time between hair washings. Heads up, a bottle of Wen is a little more expensive up front, but the bottle will last for a long time because you’re washing less frequently. The Wen Pomegranate Cleansing Conditioner is amazing. I love the fresh scent and how soft my hair is after using it.
Wen often has limited time seasonal scents. One large bottle typically lasts me a whole season (3 months) until their next seasonal scents.
2. Use the Right Comb
Using the wrong comb on your hair can actually cause hair damage. Choose the right comb to help reduce damage when brushing your hair. For wet hair, use your fingers or a plastic brush so you don’t tug, tear, or rip your hair. My personal favorite is the Wet Brush.
Try not to use a plastic brush or comb on dry hair as it could make your hair frizzy and static-y. A metal comb will help you detangle your hair without getting static.
3. Trim Your Hair Regularly
The drier winter air can make your hair more susceptible to split ends. Getting a trim every six to eight weeks will not only reduce the chance of dry, splitting ends but will also keep your hair looking healthy.
4. Use a leave-in conditioner
Using a leave-in conditioner will help combat static and fly-aways in the winter. While you can always use the trick of wiping dryer sheets across your hair, Wen provides a better solution. Their Cleansing Conditioner doubles as a leave-in conditioner. Just use a small amount after washing and you’ll get tangle-free, shiny hair – even when air dried!
For a between-shampoo boost, I love using the Wen by Chaz Dean Lavender Replenishing Treatment Mist. Not only can you use this versatile mist to give your hair some extra moisture during the day, but it’s also great to give your skin a treat too. The lavender scent is so refreshing.
5. Get a Humidifier
You might be surprised to learn that having a humidifier can help your hair stay shiny and healthy. In the winter, the air in your home can become very dry, which will make your hair feel drier. Humidifiers will add moisture to the air to help prevent your hair and skin from feeling dry.
Bonus: Adding moisture to the air actually helps your home feel warmer in the winter.
6. Wear a Lined Hat
A lot of us wear hats in the winter, but did you know that your winter hat could be causing damage to your hair? Wool, acrylic, cotton, and other rough materials can rub against your hair, causing split ends. Using a silk or satin hat liner or wearing a scarf under your hat will help stop split ends and breakage.
7. Treat Your Hair to Weekly Deep Conditioning.
Most hair can use some extra TLC throughout the year, but during the winter months, a weekly deep conditioning hair treatment is essential. It will help replenish the moisture in your hair which will make it stronger and less susceptible to breakage.
