Every single day, you fall into a routine where you do the same things over and over again. Pretty quickly, these things become a habit – something you do without really thinking about it. Obviously, you’ve got loads of habits – both good and bad! However, this post will specifically look at beauty habits. This relates to all the things you do to your hair, skin, nails, and all other aspects of your beauty regime.
The fact is, many of you are guilty of slipping into some terrible beauty habits that are doing a lot of harm. So, this post will help you snap out of them, letting you take better care of yourself!
Check out the bad habits down below:

Sleeping with your makeup on
Going to sleep without taking your makeup off is an absolute no-no! It should never be done, and you should do everything to avoid falling into this bad habit. The reason you do it is understandable – you’ve had a long day, and you’re too tired to remove it. Still, this is such a terrible habit as it is awful for your skin. Make sure you remove as much of your makeup as possible every night before going to bed.
Why is this such a bad habit? Well, makeup can clog your pores and fill them full of dirt and bacteria. Think about all the different places you’ve been in, and consider how many airborne germs might be trapped in your makeup. You remove your clothes before going to bed, and you wash your hands throughout the day. But, if your face isn’t washed and clean, there is so much bacteria seeping into your skin. Ultimately, this will lead to acne breakouts, which could cause infections.
Showering with really hot water
Did you know that hot water is actually pretty bad for your skin? It’ll come as a shock to many of you, having spent all your life showering with hot water. However, excessively hot water can dry out your skin. This could also cause rashes or patches of flaky skin on your body. If you do this every single day, you’re asking to damage your skin.
Instead, you should turn the temperature down and look to make your showers shorter. Do you have to expose yourself to freezing cold water all the time? No, of course you don’t. It doesn’t even need to be cold – warm water is absolutely fine. If you’re used to the temperature being really high, this will come as a shock to you. But, after trying it for a few days, you’ll soon get used to the new temperature, and your skin will thank you.

Applying heat to your hair without protecting it
This is another one revolving around heat, but it refers to your hair instead of your skin. Also, we’re talking about using tools and devices that apply heat, rather than hot water! When you use hair dryers or straighteners, you’re subjecting your heat to extreme temperatures. Straighteners are particularly bad as you’re basically putting strands of hair between two absurdly hot pieces of metal. This can seriously damage the hair, leaving it brittle and burnt.
Do you have to stop using these products and applying heat to your hair? Well, cutting down would be a good idea, but the main fix is to protect your hair before you use them. The best heat protectants to try are ones that contain natural ingredients and are preferably oil-based. They help to nourish your hair and scalp as well as protect it from heat. Get into the habit of protecting your hair before you use any hot devices and it will remain healthier for longer.
Washing your hair every day
Another bad habit when it comes to your hair health. Washing your locks every single day is bad for your hair. Why? Well, the water and shampoo will work together to clean your scalp. That’s great, but they also remove natural oils as well as dirt. So, you end up with a scalp that’s devoid of oil, leading to dandruff and other problems. It means your hair doesn’t get the nutrients it needs from the oils, so it won’t be as healthy.
Avoid doing this, and get into a better hair-washing routine instead. Start by washing your hair every other day, then gradually increase the time between washes. Most people should be able to survive with 2 days of washing their hair per week. That’s the goal, though you may need to up the frequency depending on your hair type. Just avoid washing your hair every day as it is much worse for it than you think.

Touching your face with your hands
Now, this is a bad habit that everyone is guilty of. You can’t try to say you’re not, because you most certainly are! Touching your face with your hands is bad because of how many germs are on your fingers and palms. If you keep touching your face, you will get these germs on your skin, leading to breakouts.
Therefore, you should try to avoid doing this or carry some hand sanitizer with you wherever you go. This gives you an excuse to keep cleaning your hands, minimizing the impact if you touch your face. It should allow you to keep your skin in better condition.
Brushing your teeth after drinking tea/coffee
Is this technically a beauty habit or a healthy habit? We’re classing it as a beauty habit because it’s specifically talking about the color of your teeth. Brushing your teeth after drinking coffee or tea will lead to staining. This is because you’re basically brushing in the tannins and things that cause discoloration into your teeth!
A better habit is to drink water afterward, helping to wash these things off your teeth. Also, chewing gum for 15 minutes can help get rid of the staining elements as well. Of course, follow this up by brushing your teeth twice a day, and you’ll keep a gleaming smile.
So, there you go; some bad health habits you need to kick right now. Make your way through this list and spot any habits that you’re guilty of. From here, work on stopping these bad habits from entering your routine!
