When Ruth Graves Wakefield was trying to bake a batch of Butter Drop Do Cookies in her lodge, The Toll House Inn, she ran of out Baker’s chocolate (or possibly nuts) and used chopped up pieces of Nestle Semi-Sweet chocolate instead. Instead of melting into the dough, the chocolate chips kept shape and the first chocolate chip cookie was made.
