Sometimes accepting a wedding invitation can be challenging, especially when you have to do shop for a dress or travel to get to the wedding location. Not all weddings are held within driving distance of where you live. If the wedding venue is within walking distance as you can simply get dressed and head towards the venue. However, oftentimes attending a wedding requires some sort of travel, whether it be by bus or by plane. If you’re part of the wedding party or if your daughter is a flower girl, you might want to know how you can protect your outfits for the wedding. Here are a few tips on how to care for a flower girl dress, or any wedding outfit, when you have to travel to the wedding.
Use a Garment Bag
A great way to protect your wedding apparel is to use a garment bag. Garment bags protect clothing from being damaged, stained or picking up any bad odors while you travel. Before putting the dresses in the garment bags, make sure the bags do not have any holes or any dirt/mold inside. Dirt or mold may stain pretty white flower girl dresses or whatever clothing you store in the bag. You might want to use garment bags that are new to help keep your dresses clean. If a petticoat is part of your outfit, consider using separate garment bags for the dress and petticoat.
Use a Flat Carry-on Bag or Luggage
When traveling with clothing that can easily wrinkle, use a flat suitcase instead of a backpack. A flat suitcase helps keep the dress in place without being wrinkled compared to a backpack. While backpacks are convenient, the clothing inside will usually get crumpled or wrinkled and may require ironing before wearing. Since you’ll likely be carrying other items in the suitcase, like both your and your daughter’s dance shoes, position the dress properly and securely in the bag. If possible, store items in their own separate bags, like storing shoes in a shoebox or bag. This also helps keep your items organized.
Stow your Luggage in the Overhead Compartment
Whether traveling by bus or by plane, the safest area to stow the carry-on suitcase containing the dress is in the overhead compartment of your plane, train, or bus. If the overhead compartment is full, and if there are available seats, try to store your bag on a vacant seat. Airplanes often have wider overhead compartments, making it easier to stow your bag. If overhead bins are full, ask the stewards/stewardess for help to find a safe place to store your suitcase.
Dry Clean or Iron After Arriving But Before the Wedding
Normally, if a wedding venue is located outside the state or there is a need to travel, a hotel is booked by either the couple or you. This gives wedding guests time to get enough rest before the grand day. To have a stress free and better rest, ensure your dresses well ironed before traveling. It’s also a good idea to try on and clean your shoes before you pack them. When you arrive at the wedding destination, double check your garments before you need to wear them. You may want to iron out small wrinkles that have appeared or hang items out overnight to get rid of any odors.
With these easy tips, you’ll ensure that your dress, and your daughter’s flower girl dress, are ready to wear for the big day.
