Pizza and ice cream is one of those great food combos that will stand the test of time. Ham & eggs, peanut butter & jelly, chocolate & anything. Over this long 4th of July weekend, we decided to have our very own pizza party with some of our favorite ice cream and trying out a new frozen pizza. I love this combo because it’s not only easy to make, but it’s perfect summer time food – something hot to fill you up and with a cool dessert to finish it off.
A quick drive up the highway brought us to the local Walmart. I had tried to go during a time when it wasn’t crowded, but after a few tweets, I discovered that Walmart is pretty much always crowded, so we waited until after rush hour was over and hit the road.
We went right to the freezer section where I spotted one of my favorite ice cream products – Nestlé Drumsticks. I love the delicious vanilla ice cream coated with that chocolatey shell. Plus that hidden bit of fudge at the bottom of the cone is awesome. Another ice cream favorite is Edy’s ice cream. They always have fun and unique flavors and the ice cream is always smooth and delicious.
A few freezer doors down we hit the jackpot of frozen pizzas – piles and piles of DiGiorno pizzas. I’m a fan of deep dish cheese and my friends like pizzas with meat. So I grabbed a DiGiorno Rising Crust Four Cheese and a DiGiorno Classic Thin Crust Pepperoni. I kept hearing the commercial tagline ringing through my head – “It’s not delivery! It’s DiGiorno!” and I couldn’t wait to see if the pizza actually tasted like delivery.
Once I got home, I preheated the oven and threw a couple of pizzas in. As they were baking, it filled the kitchen with the aroma of baking pizzas – as in just like how the pizza parlors smell when you walk in and you smell the pizzas in the oven. We couldn’t wait to dig in. About 20 minutes later (give or take a few minutes depending on the pizza) I pulled the pizzas out and everyone dug in.
DiGiorno did not disappoint AT ALL. The deep dish pizza was perfectly soft and bread-like while the thin crust had a great crunch to it. I LOVED the sauce. I have no idea what they put in it, but every pizza should start using the sauce. It was the perfect amount of tomato flavor with sweetness and a little something else to it. Then they topped the pizzas with cheese that tasted gourmet. The cheese actually stretched out when you took a bite, just as hot pizza cheese should. I actually think the DiGiorno pizza was better than some delivery pizzas I’ve gotten.
After everyone had eaten their fill of pizza, it was time to break out the Nestlé Drumsticks. With the first bite, I was a happy camper. I do follow a strategy when it comes to eating. I like the peanut topping so I slowly eat my way around the bottom of the ice cream – chomp, chomp, chomp – so that I have a vanilla ice cream cone with a fudge & peanut covered “cap”. Then I bite the top part off and start eating the cone.
In the end, this Nestlé & DiGiorno pizza party was a huge success. Everyone left with full tummies and smiles on their face. I’m excited that I got to try a new brand of frozen pizza that tasted so delicious. I’m also happy that I still have a couple of Drumsticks still left in the freezer – I think I’m going to go eat one now. 🙂
I hope that you and your family have a great 4th!

yesterday they were giving away Drumsticks at select Walmarts across the country.
Yes they were! Did you get a chance to grab one?
No, my youngest had a tonsillectomy on Thursday, so I haven’t been out much. But, I did sign up for the free ice cream coupon on the first day of summer on the Drumstick FB page. It should be coming soon.
That pizza really does look better than delivery.:)
