I have always loved crafting and I’ve been intrigued by one of the latest trends: Hand Lettering. Hand Lettering is a creative form of drawing letters–it’s not formal calligraphy or typography, but it does incorporate some of those styles. While some may follow specific fonts, many artists create their own variation of a font which fits their personality. I was excited to receive the Creative Lettering and Beyond Art & Stationery Kit. The Creative Lettering and Beyond Art & Stationery Kit makes it easy to learn hand lettering. The kit is a wonderful introduction to Hand Lettering, contains a 40-page project book featuring four artists, two chalk pencils, one fine-line ink marker, one two-sided chalk board, an easel, and five note cards with envelopes.
The book is helpful in explaining the difference in serif and sans serif fonts, a list of basic tools needed–and a list of extras for when you’re ready to invest in more, lettering basics, encourages the mixing of fonts, and projects to get you started. There is no right or wrong way to create the letters, and the more you practice, the stronger your skills will develop into works of art.
I would recommend starting with some inexpensive note paper or sketch pads before investing in heavy cardstock. I already had some tools from other paper crafting ventures, so I incorporated a few of those with the kit. A pencil and eraser are a great way to start—you can write in pencil, trace over in ink, and erase the pencil marks until you’re confident in your creative lettering. The most important thing is to practice in order to hone your skills—the more you write, the better the results will be. Don’t forget to have fun, use a touch of whimsy, and add your personality to your art.
I tried several projects in one sitting, practiced some of the flourishes, and started to get a handle on it in less than an hour. This kit makes a great gift and is perfect for most ages. The tips for Hand Lettering in the project book will get you started and pique your interest to complete more complex lettering crafts—there’s no limit to the creativity you can cultivate after learning the basics.
I was inspired by the Creative Lettering and Beyond Art & Stationery Kit and will use the skills learned to make more projects in the future. I can’t wait to tackle my next paper craft design with the tips and techniques featured in this all-in-one starter kit.
