Winter has been coming on strong in recent months. From watching the lake turn from water to a vast “field” of snow to snow-coated pine-trees, winter abounds. Of course, when the snow is falling, heading out for dinner becomes less appealing and staying indoors sounds… warm. When you’re home with friends and loved ones, open a bottle of wine and a winter party you have created. For your upcoming New Year’s Resolution parties or get-togethers, consider the wines of Brancott Estate Flight Song.

Brancott Estate Flight Song Wines
Located in Marlborough, New Zealand, Brancott Estate is the largest producer and exporter of the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wine they helped put on the map when they planted the world’s first Sauvignon Blanc vines at Brancott Vineyard in 1975. Many of the wines we’ve been trying have been locally produced so it was lovely being able to taste a wine from New Zealand.
Brancon Estate Flight Song includes a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and a Marlborough Pinot Grigio. While both are white wines, the difference is in the type of grape used (either sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio). Pinot Griogio is a dry white wine that is light and crisp with a pale yellow color. Sauvignon Blanc is also a dry wine but often has a fuller fruit flavor.

Brancott Estate Flight Song Pinot Grigio 2013
Combining floral notes with pear and lemon, the Marlborough Pinot Grigio had a lovely, light fruit flavor with a clean, balanced finish. This would pair well with seafood, pastas, or to just enjoy while relaxing.
For me, the sweeter of the two was the Brancott Estate Flight Song Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. With distinct fragrant notes of grapefruit and passionfruit, I thought this wine had a vibrant, tropical feel. It has a bright sweetness with a pop of tart afterwards that give it a smooth finish.
What makes Brancott Estate Flight Song wines more than just great wines is that they are able to achieve amazing quality and taste in fewer calories. One glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has 88 calories and a glass of the Marlborough Pinot Grigio comes in at just 87 calories. By harvesting select grapes earlier in the summer when their sugar levels are naturally lower, Brancott Estate is able to produce a wine that is 20% lighter in calories (compared to the previous year’s Pinot) without sacrificing flavor. Delicious wine and fewer calories? That sounds (and tastes) win-win (or should I say… wine-wine….) to me! 🙂

wow, interesting they can harvest sooner to reduce calories, but not lose flavor and taste!
