A Bulb that Lasts 22 years
Not all light bulbs are the same – both when it comes to energy usage and life expectancy. I didn’t always think about either of these when I was shopping for bulbs – I only used to look at how many watts it has – but those are two things that you want to look at when you’re shopping for an energy “smart” light bulb.
The standard “incandescent” light bulb lasts for around 1,000 hours, or about 42 days if you left it on all day. CFL (compact flourescent lights) last about 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs – about 10,000 hours, or 417 days if you left it on all the time. The new Insignia LED light bulbs that are hitting the market use less energy and last even longer than CFL bulbs – 25,000 hours, or more than 3 years if you left it on all the time. That means if you buy LED bulbs, you likely won’t need to buy another bulb for over 20 years (with normal usage, because who really leaves their lights on 24/7?) If the bulbs last longer, that means you don’t need to buy as many of them.
The math backs up buyinb LED as well. The Insignia LED Light Bulb last 22 years and costs $16.99 at Best Buy. A typical incandescent bulb lasts for less than a year (with normal use) and costs around $2 (give or take.) If you wanted to light your house with an incandescent bulb for 20 years, you’d likely need at least 20 bulbs. 20 bulbs x $2 per bulb = $40 vs. 1 Insignia LED Light Bulb for $16.99. (These numbers are all theoretical approximations of course. ;))
Lower Your Electric Bill
But the savings don’t stop at just the cost of bulbs. Insignia LED Light Bulbs use much less energy to provide the same amount of light. A 60W incandescent bulb uses 60W of energy while the Insignia LED Light Bulb only uses 13W to product the same amount of light, using 75% less electric. That means if the only thing you did was swap all your incandescent bulbs out with LED bulbs, your electric could be reduced by up to 75%. Talk about a huge savings.
Now that we see how the Insignia LED Light Bulbs will help us save money (by reducing the number of bulbs we’ll be buying over time) and lower our electric bills (by using much, much, less energy), the question is – how well does it light? Brilliantly (har har.) I replaced one of the bulbs in the bathroom with the Insignia LED Light Bulb and it provided the same warm light as the other bulbs. One thing I did notice was that the bulb is made of a frosted white plastic instead of the glass we typically see. I’m sure that helps the Insignia LED Light Bulb provide that warm glow, but I also like that it won’t shatter if it accidentally gets dropped or if a lamp gets tipped over.
Living in a house that has lots of light bulbs, switching to the Insignia LED Light Bulbs will really help lower our electric bills. It will also help reduce the amount of money we spend on new bulbs over time. As we continue the process of switching from the old incandescent bulbs to newer, energy-saving light bulbs, we’ll continue to see our energy costs drop, which is a nice thing to know.
