I have a bad habit – I eat at the computer. French fries, cashew nuts, pizza, rice, if you can eat it, I will while working on this blog. Inevitably, the keyboard will get kind of sticky or greasy, which means I very carefully have to clean the keys with expensive cleaner cloths so I don’t gross myself out every time I type. Throw a couple of kids into the keyboard equation and the problem becomes exponentially stickier. Dirty keyboards and mice in a house with active computer users can lead to germs and bacteria growing and living on those items that we touch every day. Fortunately, Unotron has introduced a line of computer peripherals that are medical grade, making them completely washable.
Utilizing Unotron’s SpillSeal technology, you can totally submerge the Unotron keyboards and mice in soapy water or antibacterial solutions, killing all of the icky stuff, then rinse it off and use it after cleaning. I’m typing this post using the Unotron Washable Antimicrobial Corded Keyboard after placing it under running water for two minutes. There are even a few drops of water lingering on and around the keys, but everything is still typing and functioning perfectly.
The keyboard was plug and play ready – I just plugged it into an available USB port, and I was ready to go. The keys feel comfortable and are on the quieter side when you press them. Not so much of a click-click-click, but more like a thump-thump-thump, if you know what I mean. Haha!
In addition to the corded keyboard that I tested, they also have a wireless version and two roll-up keyboards that are also washable.
I also tested out the Unotron M11 ScrollSeal Washable Optical Mouse. Just like the keyboard, this mouth can be fully submerged in water, which I did. The mouse moves very well and smoothly using the optical tracking. The right and left buttons feel like other buttons, but the scroll wheel feels a little smaller than some of the other mice I’ve used before. However all buttons and scrolls functioned perfectly after being submerged in my sink. I really liked that the Scroll wheel could be removed and washed separately, since that’s where a lot of the grime seems to collect.
After the kids come in from a day playing outside and decide they want to play a computer game, or after the hubby comes back from doing yardwork and wants to look up sports scores, or after I’ve finished eating my Chinese food while writing my blog posts, the Unotron keyboard and mouse can be easily cleaned and disinfected in the kitchen sink. This is a great way to help keep the computer components clean and more importantly, help keep the house a sanitary and germ-free environment.
If you would like to try these family (and soap and water)-friendly computer peripherals, Unotron’s washable keyboards and mice are available from their online store – www.unotrononline.com.
